  • "...then their almost invariable toasted cheese, a Minorcan formatge duro, not unlike Cheddar, that toasted remarkably well."

  • Might this be "fromage," you think?

  • formaggio duro would make sense in Italian.

  • In the United States (at least where I'm from), it used to be a synonym for "tough luck." "Well, that's just hard cheese." :-)

  • Yes, I thought so too. Given that it wasn't just the T that made it misspelled, but the order of the "or" at the beginning... I decided to just enter it the way it was printed in the book. I don't know if it's corrected in other editions, or if, being Minorcan, it's spelled a little differently, or what.

  • I'd have guessed a typo except for this paragraph in the Wikipedia entry for Minorca, which I just unearthed:

"Lingering British influence is seen in the Minorcans' taste for gin, which during the local festes (holidays dedicated to a town's patron saint), the islanders mix with bitter lemon to make the popular Pomada. Also famous is Formatge de Maó, a cheese typical of the island."

So probably just a different spelling. :-)
